Swan Song – Working Conditions

In the final period of the history of Óbuda Shipyard, the situation of the workers steadily deteriorated, characterized by constant layoffs. The number of workers at the factory was still at 1,000 in 1985, but only four years later it was less than half of that. The poor and hopeless economic situation, the often ill-considered management decisions and the fear of layoffs had a negative effect on the mood of the workers.

Although the remaining factory workers did everything they could to maintain the usual standard, the factory increasingly drifted towards closure. In order to avoid losing their livelihood, many did not wait for the layoffs and looked for other jobs.

After the closure of Óbuda Shipyard, the former collective did not disperse: they continue to regularly meet in Óbuda reminiscing about the olden days and preserving the legendary factory solidarity.
