Henrik Rötzer was born in Budapest in 1895. The family lived in an apartment on Majláth Street in Óbuda. Rötzer attended the Higher Commercial School in Budapest’s District 7, and from 1914 on he worked as an accountant at Óbuda Shipyard. From 1926, he became a member of the DDSG Accounting Officers’ Corps. His wife, Ilona Holler, also worked at Óbuda Shipyard for a while.
He became interested in photography at a young age, and it became his passion. His photos were published in numerous Hungarian trade magazines and illustrated newspapers. From 1936, he regularly participated in domestic and foreign photo exhibitions. Between 1938 and 1945, during the German occupation, he also worked as an accountant at the shipyard. By then he was living with his family in Csillaghegy. He remained at the shipyard until 1951, and despite the difficult circumstances he continued working as an accountant, office worker and amateur photographer. For many years he kept a diary in which he wrote several times about life at the factory.
Officials
In addition to the factory managers, engineers, skilled workers and apprentices, the factory officials (office workers, accountants, ship inspectors, warehousemen) were also indispensable in the almost self-sufficient shipyard. Their administrative work guaranteed a smooth operation at the plant. Their various organizations made them known throughout the city. Among these the best known was the DGT Officials’ Club, founded in 1900, which organized numerous charity and cultural events until the end of World War II: it held balls and celebrations, and actively participated in the church life of Óbuda and the capital. In the party-state period the number and importance of factory officials increased due to various corporate structures and transformations, but they also considered the organization of community events and gatherings very important.
