Károly Megyeri – Shipbuilder, Shipsmith

Károly Megyeri was a shipbuilder, shipsmith and draftsman born in 1930 in Óbuda. Due to the hardships of World War II, he had to work as a child to support his family, which he managed to do by breeding rabbits and pigeons. After the war, in 1947, he applied to Óbuda Shipyard where two of his uncles already worked, and they recommended the 17-year-old boy for employment. Initially, he was a riveter on the slip and quickly integrated into the collective. With the help of the factory, he passed the shipbuilding technical minimum exam in 1954 and then obtained a qualification as a ship locksmith.

In the following years, he received numerous awards for his excellent work, and in 1958 an article was written about him in the newspaper Hajóépítő as the best employee of the shipbuilding workshop. He received several awards not only individually but also as part of the brigade in the 1960s. He was a member of the Óbuda Workers’ Sport Fishing Association and had his own fishing pier in the factory bay. He was a respected employee of the shipyard and one of the central figures of the collective. The exemplary husband and head of a family moved to the celestial shipwrights’ workshop in 1972.

Apprentices

The training of the right workforce played a prominent role in Óbuda Shipyard almost from the very beginning. At the bottom of the shipyard hierarchy were the apprentices who joined one of the workshops as teenagers, gradually learned the given profession and were later able to move to a higher position.

From the beginning of the 20th century, the apprentices, known as boatboys, could take exams in certain professions at the plant, for which they received an official apprenticeship certificate. In the period following World War II, the theoretical and on-site practical training of industrial apprentices continued, in which the fact that the individual family dynasties followed one another in the field played a significant role, thus strengthening the intimate and cohesive collegiality of Óbuda Shipyard.
