The Johann Baptist was the first steam-powered tugboat built by DDSG, using American river experience. The ship was named after Baron Johann Baptist Puthon (1776-1839), the first president of DDSG. The uniquely designed, experimental tugboat operated until its scrapping in 1895. Since the ship’s technical solutions on the Danube did not live up to expectations, DDSG did not build any more steamboats of this type. The hull was built in the Óbuda Shipyard, but its 300-horsepower steam engine was supplied by the (Charles) Morgan Iron Works in New York. The original price of the ship was 150,264 Austrian-value forints.
